Does a technical write-off cancel a loan?

Not by itself. RBI’s framework distinguishes an accounting technical write-off from a compromise settlement. In a technical write-off, the lender’s claims against the borrower can remain and recovery is not waived merely because of the accounting treatment.

What makes a settlement different?

A compromise settlement is a negotiated arrangement with the borrower to resolve the lender’s claims in cash. It may involve the lender accepting a sacrifice on the amount due. RBI places such arrangements within the lender’s board-approved policies; seeing a written-off label is not the same as receiving an accepted settlement offer.

Illustration: two documents, different questions

Suppose one document mentions an accounting write-off while another sets out a proposed payment amount and deadline. Do not assume they have identical effects. First identify who issued each document, which account it concerns and what it actually confirms. This is an illustration, not a client outcome or a statement about a particular lender.

Before transferring money

Make a short verification checklist and obtain answers through official lender channels.

  • Verify the account number and authority of the sender.
  • Ask whether the offer has been approved or is still only a proposal.
  • Check the amount, deadline and conditions in the written terms.
  • Confirm the official payment destination independently.
  • Ask which final documents and reporting updates will follow.

Keep the whole record

Save the original offer, your correspondence, payment receipts and final account documents together. If a later communication appears inconsistent, you will have the material needed to ask a precise question. A confusing status label is a reason to seek clarification, not to assume that no further action is required.
